May 1, 2021: Nature Challenge
First walk of the 8th season!
It’s great to get together again and enjoy a great day on Randall’s/Wards Island.
From Poor Richard’s Playground we stopped at the second El Barrio Fridge to open in East Harlem (106th between 2nd and 1st). Our coordinator Rosa also happens to work with the Fridge and explained how it works—donate if you can, take what you need. It’s that simple!
Over the pedestrian bridge we to Wards Island we found our friend Nicole with the Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA) who was helping run the activities on this sunny but blustery day. We strolled around the southern shore and back up to the Urban Farm where we had lunch, including our usual apples and bananas (collecting the food waste for composting, of course).
Rosa distributed tote bags and school bags, plus plenty of other snacks, and we shared items for the “intercambio de cosas”. The Urban Farm had kite kits for the kids and they were put to good use while other kids searched for metal detecting treasure and we tested out the iNaturalist app for the City Nature Challenge—it works! Great identification tool for plants and animals.
We chatted with RIPA friends Chris and Jennifer, and shared the Adventure Labs app (part of Geocaching). A few of us set off to complete the Randall’s Island series and we checked in on the geocache we placed at the end of last summer. Still intact, just needed some cleaning.
A great start to the new season!
