Here are highlights of Week 4. This week we wrappe Here are highlights of Week 4. This week we wrapped it all up with talking about the disparities between East Harlem and the Upper East Side. Why is life expectancy 9 years longer in the UES? What can we do about it? A great place to start is with MORE TREES.

Our kids joined John Sharp from Parsons School of design to survey two community spaces.

Our parents met with our City Councilmember Diaya Ayala at her office. We had dedicated time to ask questions about neighborhood safety, immigration rights and various services available to families.

We sat together to talk about our ideas for neighborhood improvement. We continued this conversation into the afternoon activity of creating zines to tell our stories of change.

The parents attended a meeting about The People’s Lower East Side Credit Union and NY Common Pantry. Angela Donadelle hosted the event at Lakeview Apartments.

Afterward we had a mini Cyclopedia ride with some of the students! Great to get on the bikes again and explore.

Our last ferry trip of the summer was to the East Village. We visited The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space which is a non-profit, volunteer-run space that teaches the history of activism in the East Village.

We visited nearby La Plaza Cultural community garden to enjoy the fruits of community activism. Last day of camp! We headed over to Chenchita’s for the last session of the summer. Special thanks to Angela Maull for coordinating our visits and activities. We’re thankful that the garden has returned after the plot was redeveloped!

Back at Jefferson Park the parents had prepared the celebratory barbecue. So much great food. We also shared a bonanza of donated clothes in our last “intercambio de cosas”! Plenty to go around.

We wrapped up with program evaluation surveys and said goodbye to another fantastic season! Thanks to everybody for making it great! 👏 ❤️ 🎉

Here are some highlights of our very busy Week 3! Here are some highlights of our very busy Week 3!

Our theme this week was #climate change, and we started a discussion of what it is, why it can cause problems for us, and what we might do about it.

Activity: Draw some of ideas for stopping climate change. At our lunchtime meeting spot we measured #temperature in the sun and shade. At least 20 degrees different!

Guest: Dr. Louis Hernandez led a Community Cafe session with the parents.

Activity: We learned about #noise pollution by dividing into four teams. Each team drew a map of the #JeffersonHouses block between 1st and 2nd avenues and 115th to 112th streets. Then, we measured the noise at each corner and in the interior courtyard spaces. There was twice as much noise along the streets than in the interior. We care about noise because it makes it harder for kids to learn in school, and makes it harder for kids to sleep at night which also affects learning.

Our third ferry day took us down to #BrooklynBridgePark to cool off in the #WaterLab playground at #Pier6. We set our our #solaroven with an egg inside. 2 and half hours later it was hard boiled!

Activity: The end of our third week started with completion of our “world building” exercise from earlier in the week. We decorated our paper-mache globes with the worlds we’d like to live in and discussed climate change in our neighborhoods locally and globally.

Our third visit to #ChenchitasGarden was busy! Elizabeth Amadiz from the #FamilyEnrichmentCenter stopped by to tell us about resources right next door. And Dr. Aimee Mankodi from #InstituteforFamilyHealth shared health resources and info for the entire family.

Here are just a few highlights from our action pac Here are just a few highlights from our action packed week 2. We did mapping exercises and some dirt graphing of traffic counting from last week! We went to the #HerbGarden and met Bunny Sheffield to learn about composting and growing food. We went to the #FamilyEnrichmentCenter where Ms. Valerie the librarian arranged for storytime and activities and visited ducks and turtles in #CentralPark. We took our second ferry ride up to #Soundview as part of our water quality week where we saw tons of wildlife including clams, mussels and crabs and admired the oyster beds from afar as well as learning about how the sewer overflow system empties raw sewage into the East River on rainy days! After the rain the snails came out in force! On day 8 The parents had a visit with Peter Suhr and colleagues from #HarlemEmpowermentProject to discuss job placement, GED and ESL services. We concluded the water quality week by testing our #NYC drinking fountain water. Spoiler–its clean! #eastharlem #environment
Some of the highlights of the first week: Luis Ram Some of the highlights of the first week: Luis Ramos speaks on Taíno culture and environmentalism with focus on the importance of trees. Rosa Diaz of the District 4 Community Education Council for NYC public schools spoke with our parents about how to navigate the school system. Lupe showed us how to make paper bag trees.
Guest: Dr. Louis Hernandez led the first of his Community Cafe sessions We visited Taller Boricua, where Albert Justiniano talked about his gallery show, featuring Taino and other imagery reflecting Puerto Rican heritage. Our first NYC Ferry trip to Roosevelt Island. We walked over to the newly relaunched Chenchita’s Garden for a variety of activities. Angela Maull (garden member) works with kids on making their own button pins, watering the garden beds, and planting our own garden! #eastharlemnyc #newyork #communitology #walking #families #environment

We had the most amazing time as one big family, and learning together is the best! We had the chance to see and touch many animals, learn about water quality and different types of ways we can help to keep our Earth 🌎 Clean. We learned our awesome bees 🐝 are such an incredible part of us and how they take care and work hard each day to keep us alive. Most importantly, we learned that working together is the best way to keep our Habitat healthy and safe for us ALL.
